How to Use a Whetstone Safely
Over time, knives will become dull especially if you are using it frequently for all your cooking and other household needs. But instead of buying a new one or another set of knives, you can easily sharpen the blades using whetstones. Although you have other options when it comes to sharpening your knife, the whetstone is the most efficient tool since it would not grind too much of the blade. But using it may be hazardous especially if you do not know how to use a whetstone properly.
Before you start using the whetstone, make sure that the surface is completely dry. Wet surfaces may cause it slip. There is a high chance of having an accident if you would place the whetstone even on damped areas. It is advisable that you do the knife sharpening on your countertop. Or you can also place it on a dry cutting board as well. Use all the precautionary measures to ensure that the whetstone would not slip. There are now non-slip mats that you can purchase at stores. Another alternative is to put a moist paper towel to prevent the tool from sliding.
The side with the coarse grit should be facing you. This is the part of the whetstone that would help you bring your dull knife back to life.
Hold the handle of the knife with your hand while the other hand would hold the edge of the cutting tool. See to it that the edge and the point of the knife are against the stone. It is important that when holding the knife against the whetstone, you would hold it in a 22 degree angle so make sure that the knife will be efficiently sharpened. Make sure that you use one of your Hands to stabilize the knife’s blade.
By applying a moderate pressure, the blades of the knife should be slid back and forth on the whetstone. You should do this from the tip up to the bottom part of the blade. While doing so, see to it that you maintain the 22 degree angle.
Do the back and forth sliding of the blade for about ten times. Then turn the knife so the other side would face the stone. Both faces of the blade should be sharpened to make a useful cutting tool for your kitchen.
Now that you know how to use a whetstone properly and already finished sharpening your knife on both sides, you can now use the sharpening steel. This is like giving a finishing touch to your knife’s blade.
